Buckley Air Force Base, Space Based Infrared Systems Facility

Aurora, Colorado

<  >

This $14 million, secure ground segment facility houses the mission control station and provides central processing functions for the tactical and strategic space-based early warning, battle-space characterization, and technical intelligence-gathering requirements. The SBIRS program fuses data from multiple satellite constellations and classified ground resources to assess and respond to ballistic missile threats to North America and tactical threats around the world. The 50,000–square foot facility includes 27,500 square feet of 24-inch-high raised access flooring, and a TEMPEST filtered secured area. The complex is a highly classified communication and data processing facility designed completely to SCIF (sensitive compartmented information facilities) standards for the SBIRS ground segment. The facility design includes utilities, emergency power, 37.5 kVA static UPS systems with battery backup for 40 minutes, site improvements, landscaping, HVAC, and fire protection systems. Additionally, DMJM performed a review and design of the facility’s HVAC and power systems, had a role in Space Warning Squadron community planning, and participated in system integration technical discussions to meet all design requirements.
