Pentagon Renovation

Arlington, Virginia

<  >

DMJM, in joint venture, is functioning as an extension of the Pentagon Renovation Office by providing program management support and technical expertise to the restoration and post–September 11th recovery of the nation’s military headquarters and largest renovation program—the Pentagon. The largest low-rise office building in the world, the 6.5 million-square-foot Pentagon is a small city—with 17.5 miles of corridors and 25,000 mission critical employees—that functions as a self-sustaining, secure community. Facilities involved in the extensive renovation include a central heating and refrigeration plant, medical facilities, shopping mall, dining and athletic facilities, library and post office, and mass transit stations. The sheer scale of the effort requires more than 1 million square feet of external swing space, a substantial amount of internal swing space, and extensive tenant relocation requirements. Ancillary projects include utility and structural upgrades and retrofit, pedestrian bridges, and congressionally mandated security projects and systems—including a 120,000–square foot receiving facility and a $34 million intermodal transit center. DMJM developed the master plans and design criteria, as well as many of the early designs to meet the requirements of security, safety and efficiency of operation, as well as historic preservation, the NCPC and CFA. After Wedge 1 was hit on September 11, 2001, many of the above features were credited with saving lives, and getting portions of the building back into operation quickly and efficiently.
