USAA is a Fortune 500 company, and one of the nation’s largest insurance and financial services organizations. As part of a facilities consolidation, USAA relocated from four buildings to a 530,000–square foot southwest regional headquarters, housing approximately 2,000 employees near the international airport serving Tampa, Florida. The structure is prominently sited on the southern edge of a manmade lake, along the edge of an interstate highway. The facility has seven large, flexible floor plates containing open office areas, a data/voice center, a clinic, a credit union, a drive-in claims center, and a full facilities maintenance center. A six-story parking garage with a 1,700-car capacity is linked by pedestrian connectors to the first three office floors. The highly sophisticated data and telecommunications needs of USAA were an essential ingredient driving the overall planning and design of the work environment. Building security—a paramount concern—was designed to incorporate a flow of visitor traffic to non-employee work areas and floors. |
