CenterPoint Energy Plaza (formerly Houston Industries Plaza) is home to the third largest publicly-traded natural gas delivery company in the United States. Owned and 50 percent occupied by the energy firm, the 1.5 million–square foot high-rise was renovated to transform a nondescript, outdated property into a corporate headquarters and landmark building. Budget was a primary concern for the utility company, thus the renovation focused on the building base, top, interior public areas, and upgrade of building systems. The original glass "skirt" at the lower floors of the building exterior was removed and replaced with granite and glass, which provided a more distinct street level presence and clarified the building entry. A 50-foot light tower and sculptural skylights, were added to the exterior plaza to create a sense of monumentality, and an 86-foot vertical addition to the building top gives the building a skyline presence. |
